Lime Mortar vs Cement — Getting It Right on Swindon Chimneys

Repointing these with hard cement creates a rigid joint next to soft brick. The brick loses every time — it cracks, spalls and lets water in. Post-war chimneys with engineering brick and cement mortar can be repointed in cement — the original specification matches. We never use lime where cement is correct, and we never use cement where lime is correct.
